Leon Reid bolting for classic showing in Queensland!

Leon Reid bolting for classic showing in Queensland (by Athletics NI):

Leon Reid reckons it is time he bolted into sprinting’s A-List by joining the 200 metres’ Sub-20 club.

The 23-year-old is among seven of Northern Ireland’s Commonwealth Games athletics team set to open their Australian campaigns in Wednesday’s Queensland Classic meeting in Brisbane.

Bath-based Reid, who spent two weeks training in Dubai before arriving Down Under, will double up in the 100 and 200 metres with his opposition including a number of his would-be Gold Coast rivals, including English trio Adam Gemili, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Zharnel Hughes.

But Reid insists his priority here, and at the Commonwealths will be his longer event – and ducking below the 20-seconds barrier before too long.

“Sub-10 for 100 metres I don’t really care about to be honest,” he said. “Sub-20 is the goal. I’m going to run the 100 metres and the 200 metres in Brisbane and I want a personal best in one of them at least. And it’s all systems go for then.”

Adam Kirk-Smith will face Rio 2016 gold medallist 1500 Matt Centrowitz in the 1500 metres, Ben Reynolds meets recently-crowned world indoor champion Andy Pozzi in the 110m hurdles while Adam McMullen will bid to take his fine winter form into the long jump.

Heptathlon hope Kate O’Connor is set for a treble test in the javelin, 200m and 100m hurdles, Amy Foster doubles in the 100 and 200m while Emma Mitchell lines up in the 1500m.

The meeting starts at 8am UK time.
