Springwell RC News Update

With September we see the road races start to decrease, although there’s still a few prestigious events to come, and it won’t be long before the autumn trail races and the mud of the winter cross country start to dominate the calendar.

On Sunday 8th September eight Springwell RC members were among the 57,000 runners taking part in the worlds biggest half marathon at the Great North Run and that annual pilgrimage from Newcastle Upon Tyne to the Coast at South Shields.

A large proportion of the race consists of runners raising money for charity and the Springwell contingent were no exception with Rosie Little and Jimmy Stewart both raising much needed funds for the Boom Cancer Foundation with their efforts and Roisin Walker continuing her longstanding efforts of raising funds for cancer charities. On this occasion Marie Curie are to benefit from Roisin‘s miles.

Springwell RC Results – 618th Jimmy Stewart 1.27.32, 5252nd Mervyn Thompson 1.48.32, 9592nd Mark Neely 1.57.39, 21916th Roisin Walker 2.19.35, 22460th Andrew Kincaid 2.21.19, 23052nd Fiona Walker 2.22.33, 23989th Hayley Neely 2.24.22, 24736th Rosie Little 2.25.49

On Saturday 7th September Father and Son, Colin and Oisin Brennan travelled to MacGillicuddy’s Reeks, in County Kerry for the Reeks Skyline Mountain Race.

With 30km of running and just under 3000m of climbing over some of the most challenging technical aspects of mountain racing, the Reeks Skyline is the hardest mountain race in Ireland.

Stepping up to the challenge Oisin produced another impressive display of mountain running to finish 3rd in 4.55.43 with dad Colin 10th in 5.50.15.

Also on Saturday 7th September the East Antrim Marathon Series held their 100th Marathon with many of the regular competitors turning up to celebrate the occasion. Springwell RC’s Helena Dornan put in another winning performance to win the ladies race while in the Half Marathon it was the ever dependable Chris Denton who claimed victory.
