Downpatrick Lions ‘3 Lakes’ Challenge:
On Saturday 13th May 2017, Downpatrick Lions Club and local events management company Atlas Running, hosted the annual Downpatrick Lions ‘3 Lakes’ Challenge, an event which offers participants the choice of either a 15k race or a 7k race, both of which are set on an impressive undulating rural course, starting and finishing at the Lakeside Inn, Downpatrick.
In the absence of pre-race favourites Brendan Teer and Barrie Atkinson, both of East Down AC, it was Aaron McGrady (Unattached) who emerged victorious in the 15k event. However, Aaron was made to work for the top prize by Mourne Runners star Laura Graham, who returned to competitive action following her heroic win at the Belfast City Marathon.
Laura led for much of the race, but in the latter stages, Aaron battled well to come through and edge it in 54:52 (1st place). AAI National Marathon and Half Marathon Champion Laura took 2nd place overall and 1st place in the ladies race in 55:06.
East Down AC pair Martin Wilcox (56:37) and James Savage (58:26) then secured 2nd place and 3rd place in the men’s race respectively. In the ladies race, it was Amanda Perry (Ballydrain Harriers) who took 2nd place in 1:03:39; then in-form athlete Joanne Foster (East Down AC) completed the top three in 1:05:47 (3rd place).
In the associated 7k event, Matthew McGrattan won in 26:45 (1st place), with Northern Ireland international mountain runner Catherine O’Connor (East Down AC) taking the ladies title in 27:23; this saw Catherine take 3rd place overall.
