Commonwealth Games 2018:

Northern Ireland’s Amy Foster (City of Lisburn AC) came agonisingly close to a spot in the women’s 100 metres final at the Commonwealth Games in Australia this morning (Sunday 8th April 2018).  The City of Lisburn AC star took 4th place in the toughest semi-final, running 11.54 seconds.

It left the Irish record holder, who finished in 2nd place in her heat (in 11.59secs), ranked tenth overall – with the 200m still to come, beginning on Tuesday morning (10th April 2018).

And the switch from indoors to blazing sun went better than hoped, she declared.

“It was really fortunate that Athletics Northern Ireland brought us out early to prepare for the heat,” Foster said. “I had a race last week which was definitely blowing off the cobwebs for the 100 metres. At 60m then, I went ‘oops, there’s another 40. Whereas here, I felt ready. Now.  I will do the 200. I might not enjoy it. But is another opportunity to go out in front of the crowd.”

Also on Day 1 of the athletics competition, fellow Team NI athlete Dempsey McGuigan (Finn Valley AC), finished in an excellent 6th place in the Hammer competition.  Dempsey landed his second best ever throw of 70.24 metres.

Coming up on the Gold Coast…

Tomorrow (Monday 9th April 2018), there will be four of the Athletics NI athletes in competition at the Commonwealth Games, with Emma Mitchell (QUB AC), Ciara Mageean (UCD AC), Jack Agnew (Torque Racing) and Ben Reynolds (North Down AC) all set to kick off their Gold Coast campaign.
