Northern Velocity Eglinton Trail Race & Burren Townlands 12 mile / 6 mile Road Races:
On Tuesday 27th December 2017, over one hundred runners took on the Northern Velocity Eglinton Trail Race, which was held at Muff Glen, outside Eglinton Village in Derry/Londonderry.
While still only in its second year, the event has quickly established itself in the calendar as a popular post-Christmas outing. The 4.2 mile route consisted of two laps of the scenic, but challenging paths around the Glen. Perfect running conditions of cool, calm, dry weather greeted the athletes.
At the front of the field, Luke Dinsmore (Springwell RC) continued his excellent form, winning in a time of 23:44 (1st place). Ciaran Ferris (Springwell RC) was took 2nd place in 24:38, with Matthew McLaughlin (Foyle Valley AC) completing the podium in 24:45 (3rd place).
In the ladies race, the ever consistent Ciara Toner (Springwell RC) brought her year to a fitting end with another win, retaining her title from 2016, in a time of 27:52 (1st place). Hannah Shields (City of Derry AC) claimed 2nd place in 28:56, while Emma Smith (Orangegrove AC), secured 3rd place in 29:56.
In County Down, the fast improving Gordy Graham (Unattached) produced the performance of the day at the Burren Townlands 12 mile and 6 mile Road Races (Boxing Day – 26th December 2017). Gordy, a podium finisher at the recent 26extreme Tollymore Trail Marathon, covered the tough undulating route in 1:13:49 (1st place). Ciara Coffey (Unattached) took the ladies title in 1:28:57 (1st place).
Meanwhile, in the associated 6 mile event, Dermot Mathers (Unattached) impressed with a 36:08 finish for 1st place. Sarah McAlinden (Unattached) sealed victory in the ladies race in 42:37 (1st place).
