Newry City Marathon Events 2017:
On Sunday 28th May 2017, nearly one thousand athletes took to the streets of Newry City for the annual Newry City Marathon Events, a festival of running which offered competitors the choice of a marathon, half marathon or 10k road races.
The marathon attracted almost two hundred entries and it was Lawrence O’Hara (Unattached) who led the way. After moving through half way in 1:18:20, Lawrence managed to hold off previous winner Don Travers (Newry City Runners), who finished well, to win in 2:38:07 (1st place). Don followed just over a minute later in 2:39:11 (2nd place), before Geoff Smyth (Unattached) completed the top three in 2:51:45 (3rd place).
North Belfast Harriers’ Louise Smith produced one of the performances of the weekend to win the ladies marathon. Not only did the always impressive athlete secure victory in an excellent 2:53:26 (1st place), but she also took 5th place overall. Last year’s winner, Diane Watson (City of Lisburn AC), claimed 2nd place in 3:17:24, while Gillian McCrory (St Peter’s AC) ran well to take 3rd place in 3:31:54.
In the well-supported half marathon event, Larne native John Black (North Belfast Harriers) ran out victorious after an excellent dual with James Bolton of Woodstock Harriers. John broke the tape in 1:11:19 (1st place), with James taking the runners up spot in 1:11:25 (2nd place). Eamonn White (North Belfast Harriers), a regular at the event, claimed 3rd place in 1:12:21.
Dromore AC’s Susan Smyth continued her recent good form to win the ladies 13.1 mile race. Following on from her win at the Bann 10k earlier in the week, Susan clocked 1:28:08 for 1st place. Mourne Runners’ ever improving Joanne Graham completed the distance in 1:32:43 (2nd place), while North Down AC’s Catherine Roberts sealed a podium spot in 1:33:04 (3rd place).
In the 10k race, Northern Ireland international David O’Flaherty (Newcastle AC) claimed victory. David led the field home in 32:06 (1st place), finishing over a minute ahead of local man Dermot Mathers (Unattached), who ran well to take 2nd place in 33:22. Barrie Atkinson (East Down AC) ran 35:24 for 3rd place.
Unattached athlete Ciara Coffey was the star of the show in the ladies 10k, easing to victory in 41:41 (1st place). Erin Havern (Club Pulse Runners) followed just over three minutes later in 44:47 (2nd place) and Carol Clarke (North Belfast Harriers) secured the final podium place in 44:57 (3rd place).
