Ballymena Runners and County Antrim Harriers secure East Antrim Inter-Club Race prizes!

Larne AC host annual East Antrim Inter-Club Race 2018:

Ballymena Runners and County Antrim Harriers picked up the respective male and female team trophies as Larne Athletic Club hosted the annual East Antrim Inter-Club Race last night (Tuesday 28th August 2018).

The invite only event attracted 262 runners from Ballymena Runners, County Antrim Harriers, East Antrim Harriers, East Coast AC, Glens Runners, Monkstown Spartans, Mallusk Harriers, Whitehead Runners, Seapark AC and Glenlough Running Club.

Athletes covered an out-and-back course, descending from Linford Car Park along the Feystown Road, with the men completing a 5–mile route and the ladies, 4 miles. The first half of the course is downhill and those familiar with the route will have known what to expect, with a tough climb of almost two miles on tiring legs to the encouragement of cheering supporters at the finish.

Mathew Hewitt of East Antrim Harriers crossed the line first to win in a time of 27:47 (1st place) with James Hamilton (28:17) of Ballymena Runners in 2nd place.  Michael Bennett (Ballymena Runners) secured 3rd place in 28:36.  In the all important team event which counts each clubs first six runners; Ballymena Runners won with 33 points, East Antrim Harriers took 2nd place with 88 points and Larne based East Coast AC completed the top three with 141 points (3rd place).

The ladies race was won by Natasha Henderson of County Antrim Harriers in an excellent 26:54 (1stplace). Ballymena Runners athlete Geraldine Quigley clocked 26:56 for 2nd place before the host club’s Patricia Blair (Larne AC) claimed 3rd place in 27:12.  In the team event, which like the men, counts each clubs first six runners; County Antrim Harriers won with 91 points (1st place), very close in 2nd place was Larne AC on 92 points and in 3rd place was Seapark AC 112 points.
