Ben Branagh excels as NI athletes impress at Carlingford 5k!

Glenmore 5k road race 2017:

On Friday 4th August 2017, a large number of athletes from Northern Ireland made the short border crossing to Carlingford for the popular Glenmore 5k road race.

The route is synonymous with fast times and local athletes lived up to expectation, producing impressive results.  St Malachy’s AC man Ben Branagh battled it out with Kenyan star Freddy Sittuk and narrowly missed top spot when crossing the line in 14:43 – this saw Ben take 2nd place, just one second behind Freddy, who won in 14:42 (1st place).

Four other local men secured top ten places – North Belfast Harriers duo John Black (15:21) and Lindsay Gordon (15:23) claimed 5th place and 6th place respectively. Martin Cox (Derry Track Club) continued his good recent form with a 15:30 finish for 7th place, while the always impressive Stephen O’Gorman (Dromore AC) crossed the line in 15:51 for 9th place.  Mountain running international Zak Hanna (Newcastle AC) completed the top ten in 15:55 (10th place).

In the ladies race, Amy Bulman (Willowfield Harriers) and Catherine O’Connor (East Down AC) claimed podium places. Amy took 2nd place in 17:51, with Catherine following in 17:57 for 3rd place.  The race was won by Irish athlete Ciara Hickey in 16:59 (1st place).

Esther Dickson (Newry AC) ran well to take 5th place in 18:28, with Cathy McCourt (Unattached) hot on her heels; Cathy clocked 18:30 for 6th place. Dromore AC’s Susan Smyth followed in 19:11 (9th place), before Debbie Matchett (Ballydrain Harriers) completed the course in 19:35 (10th place).
