British Masters Association Track and Field Championships

The weekend of Saturday the 10th August saw some excellent performances by Northern Irish & Ulster athletes who made the short flight across the Irish Sea to compete in the British Masters Athletics Federation Track and Field Championships in Birmingham. Weather conditions were changeable with blustery winds, which made for some unfavourable conditions.
In the Women’s competition, pentathlete, Joanne McCauley (Newry AC) took part in a number of events in the F45 category. The High Jump was a highlight with her clearance of 1.25m winning her the silver medal. She also ran a PB of 29.78s in the 200m for 9th position and was also 9th in the 400m with 70.96s, 4th in the long jump (4.06m) and ran 14.69s to finish 8th in the 100m.Moving on to the men’s competition, Glen Scullion (Mid Ulster AC) completed the M40 100m/200m double, winning the gold in the shorter race with a time of 11.72s and 4th in the 200m in 24.06s.In the M40 800m, Stephen Orr (Orangegrove AC) finished 6th with a time of 2:09.51.
Justin Reid (Willowfield Harriers) ran 16:53.27 to claim the silver medal in the M45 5,000m. In the same age group, Ian McClurg was a busy man. He was 4th in both the Javelin (31.14m) and the long jump (4.55m) also throwing the discus 26.73 for 6th.Damian Crawford (Lifford Strabane AC) came away with a gold medal in the M50 Javelin, throwing 47.26m and the bronze medal in the Discus, throwing 38.19. He rounded his day with a 4th place in the Shot Put throwing 11.66m.In the M55 400m Hurdles, Patrick Crossan (St Anne’s AC) came 4th in 69.95s and in the 200m he came 6th in a time of 26.99s. Finally, James Harris ran a superb 73.29 to claim 4th in the M70 400m.
