Broughshane 5K and 10K Race Report

On Monday 5th August 395 runners competed in the annual Broughshane 5K & 10K road race.  The event was organised by the North West Mountain Rescue Team in conjunction with Broughshane & District Community Association and Ballymena Runners.

Top honours of the night for the 10K went to Kieran Scullion 35:10 (Ballymena Runners) who only recently took up the sport and has enjoyed a very impressive first year over all distances. 2nd place went to Shane Donnelly 35:42 (Unattached) with Stephen Nicholson 37:31 (Pace) finishing in 3rd.

The ladies 10K winner was Jane McCann (40:48).  Jane lives in Toronto and was back in Northern Ireland on holidays. A memorable achievement for Jane to take back to Toronto with her, winning the local “Garden Village of Ulster” 10K road race. Runner up was Lucy O’Dell (43:48) and 3rd went to Louise Jones (44:20).

In the 5K race Gary Scully (Nenagh AC) 17:09 had a magnificent run, breaking the 5K course record by 6 seconds.  Runner up was Robin Claxton 18:07 and 3rd spot went to Dwayne McMullan 18:08 (Glenlough Running Club).

The ladies 5K was a real family battle with Catriona Quigley securing 1st place in a time of 20:52 (Unattached).  Catrina just about held off her mother Geraldine Quigley  who came in 20:59 (Ballymena Runners) resulting in Catrina winning by 7 seconds.  This was Catriona’s second local win of the season after taking top spot at the Belles 5 mile earlier this year.  3rd position went to Kathleen Law  21:08 (Unattached).

Race conditions on the night were incredibly challenging for all the runners and indeed for the many spectators with torrential downpours throughout the evening.  Despite the conditions there were still plenty of smiles at the post race celebrations.

A big thanks to all the organisers on a very successful night of racing.
