Catherine Whoriskey and Dan Tanui lead the way at Walled City Marathon 2017!

SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon 2017:

A capacity crowd took to the start line of the Walled City Marathon in Northern Ireland’s maiden city of Derry/Londonderry (Sunday 4th June 2017).  This years event was started by AAI National Marathon Champion and winner of the ladies race at Belfast City Marathon in 2017, Laura Graham (Mourne Runners).

At the sharp end, Dan Tanui (Project Africa Athletics) bettered his runners up position from 2016 when he led the field home in 2:25:26 (1st place), but the day will be remembered for the performances of home town girl Catherine Whoriskey (City of Derry AC).

Catherine, competing in only her second marathon, took charge at the front in a way that would be expected of a seasoned competitor and despite a valiant effort from outgoing champion Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers), the Spartan athlete sealed a well-deserved victory in 2:50:38 (1st place).  Pauline claimed 2nd place in 2:53:08, while Project Africa Athletics’ Salome Jepkoech Kimutai completed the ladies podium in 2:56:39 (3rd place).

In the men’s race, Dan Tanui may have crossed the line first, but it was an easy task for the exceptionally talented Kenyan athlete.  For much of the 26.2 miles, Dan was in the shadows of team mate Emmanuel Kiprotich Melly (Project Africa Athletics) – it wasn’t until the final six miles, when Dan picked up the pace coming off the iconic Peace Bridge, that he took control and stormed to victory.

As Emmanuel Kiprotich Melly began to tire, he was also passed by former WCM winner Freddy Sittuk (Raheny Shamrock AC), who claimed 2nd place in 2:26:14.  Emmanuel held on to take 3rd place in 2:28:55.

North Belfast Harriers’ Andrew Considine was the first Northern Ireland man home in 2:40:56, which was enough to see him take 5th place overall.  In the wheelchair race, Belfast Marathon winner Karol Doherty took top honours in 2:42:06 (1st place).

Top 3 Ladies:  1st Catherine Whoriskey (City of Derry AC) – 2:50:38, 2nd Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers) – 2:53:08, 3rd Salome Jepkoech Kimutai (Project Africa Athletics) – 2:56:39
