Championchip Ireland Running Series

Championchip Ireland and Forestside have teamed up with Athletics NI to organise a unique series of timed running events to help runners of all standards keep their edge during the lockdown.  The emphasis will be on safety with the events taking place in closed locations free from cars, bicycles, walkers, dogs and others exercising. Social distancing will be paramount with runners allocated to waves of 30 or less and set off in small numbers across the start line.

The first events will take place at Down Royal race course on July 4th and 5th with a 4 mile run, 10k run and a half marathon. Narrow Water Castle on the 18th will have 5k and 10k trail runs.  EIKON at Balmoral Park in Lisburn on August 1st and 2nd will host 5k, 10k and half marathon runs and the second weekend in August Glenarm Castle will offer 5k and 10k trail runs.

On July 4th Down Royal will host a 4 mile run in the morning and then 10k runs in the rest of the day and on the 5th its half marathons all day.  Entries have already started coming in through the athletics NI web site on https://athleticsni.org/Fixtures/ChampionChip-Ireland-Running-Series

Entrants sign up using Athletics NI online registration site where they pay the entry fee and get instructions.

They choose a session in which they wish to take part eg morning, afternoon or evening. The number of participants will be governed by the govt guidelines on numbers of persons allowed to assemble at the same time and place.

They will be allocated a start wave within that session eg 10am to 10.15am or 10.15am to 10.30am.

A running number and chip is posted out in advance of the event with a colour coded number denoting their wave, no entries are accepted on the day or after the entry deadline has passed. This allows a close check on the persons accessing the event location and controls the numbers taking part.  A text message with their details to show at the entrance to gain access.  Only registered entrants with a text message or running number gets access, no spectators are permitted.

The runners will be called to the start line in small groups of 2s and 3s to cross the start mats and trigger their start time.

The finish line will be away from the start line and close to the car park so the finishers can make their way to their car and exit the area in a timely fashion to keep numbers on site to the minimum.

Times will be produced using their chip time and ranked using the age graded tables that take into account gender and age of the runner.

Times for the whole day will be published online by the following day for purely information purposes.

The events all have permits and are insured through Athletics NI and will abide by the regulations in place at the time as stated in the Sports Council Framework document.
