Spelga Skyline Mountain Race:
On Saturday 1st July 2017, local mountain runners took on the annual Spelga Skyline Mountain Race in the heart of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, an event hosted by Belfast Association of Rock Climbers & Fell Runners (BARF).
The event, which was the sixth race of the ongoing Northern Ireland Mountain Running Association (NIMRA) Championship, covered 12.4 miles in distance and incorporated approximately 1,400m of ascent – it is deemed as a ‘long’ race for Championship purposes.
At the head of the pack, William McKee (Mourne Runners) led early on, but Newcastle AC’s David Hicks came through to secure top spot. David ran well over the tough course, covering the distance in 2:39:59 (1st place). William followed in 2nd place, crossing the line in 2:42:03, before Gary Bailey (Mourne Runners) finished in 2:46:42 (3rd place).
Dromore AC’s Diane Wilson excelled in the ladies race, leading the field home in a new course record of 2:56:29 (1st place). Shileen O’Kane (Lagan Valley AC) took 2nd place in 3:02:58, while Esther Dickson (Newry AC) edged out Moire O’Sullivan (Unattached) for 3rd place – Esther clocked 3:13:31, with Moire following in 3:13:54 (4th place).
