Dealing with Uncertainty – Lessons from 2020 – A Coach’s Perspective

Athletics NI will be hosting a Para Athletics Zoom session with Jenni Banks, coach to 5x Paralympic Champion and 12x World Champion Hannah Cockroft (T34) and Paralympian, 2x World Championship medallist, European Record Holder in the T54 400m, 800, & 1500m and second fastest ever over 400m and 800m, Richard Chiassaro.

With 20 years’ experience working as a coach, performance manager and consultant, Jenni has a passion for excellence and has personally coached athletes to 74 major championship medals, 50+ world records and 7 athletes have become World Number 1s.

One of the inescapable facts of life and sport is that, at some stage, we will all face uncertainty and change and we will all get knocked from the path that we planned to follow. This uncertainty and change might be for a short time or a long time. It can be very upsetting and unsettling (that’s perfectly understandable), but it doesn’t have to be all bad.

The COVID pandemic has been extraordinary in that it has led to unprecedented change for pretty much everyone, at the same time.

The purpose of this workshop is to consider:

  • The 2020 experience – different people will have had different experiences
  • What was learnt from it?
  • What can we put in place to take advantage of situations like this in the future?

Your experiences (if you want to share, you don’t have to, you’re welcome to just listen if you’d prefer) and the experiences of others, including some world class athletes, will be used to highlight how you can make the most of bad situations.

Some common themes that Jenni will be looking at – which are just as important for success in sport and life, as well as coping in a pandemic – are the importance of:

  • having a growth mindset
  • controlling the controllables
  • knowing that every situation is what you make it or what you allow it to be
  • knowing that you have choices. How can you use them to your advantage?

The Zoom session will be on Wednesday 13th January at 7pm and sign up is free and open to all.
