Eamonn White and Sinead Murtagh emerge victorious from Newry City Half Marathon!

Newry City Half Marathon 2018:

On Sunday 27th May 2018, nearly 600 athletes took on the Newry City Half Marathon, an event organised by Newry City Runners.

The 13.1 mile course took competitors on a scenic coastal route starting at Albert Basin, just opposite the Quays Shopping Centre, Newry, before heading towards Warrenpoint and the historic Narrow Water Castle on the scenic canal carriageway.  The route was an ‘out and back’ course designed to be a flat and fast with personal best potential.

At the head of the pack, veteran athlete Eamonn White of North Belfast Harriers showed his class, easing to victory in 1:12:50 (1st place).  Gerard Heaney (St Peter’s AC) also ran well, taking 2nd place in 1:15:00, nearly three minutes ahead of the final podium placed athlete, Mark Smith (Mallusk Harriers).  Mark continued his good run of form with a 1:17:57 finish for 3rd place.

In the ladies race, Newcastle AC’s Sinead Murtagh was again in top form.  Following on from several recent quality outings, Sinead clocked 1:25:33 for 1st place.  Podium regular Susan Smyth (Dromore AC), who won the Bann 10k this week, crossed the line in 1:27:38 (2nd place), before Collete McCourt (Dub Runners) completed the top three in 1:30:10 (3rd place).
