Energia 24hr Race 2017 (inc IAU World 24hr Championships):
The Energia24-Hr Open Race sold out in record time last night, Monday 12th December 2016.
All 100 places available were snapped up in under 3 hours for an event that will sit alongside the World 24-Hour Running Championships in Victoria Park, Belfast next summer on July 1.
Entries came in from across the British Isles and from as far away as Australia, Hong Kong, Iran, India and the USA. The entry list includes 74 men and 26 women with ages ranging from 27 to 67 all looking to see how far they can go in that 24-hour period.
“The pressure has been building for some time now up to last night’s opening,” says race director Ed Smith, “In the 8 years of putting on this race we hadn’t seen anything anywhere near the interest being shown – but we were still surprised at just how quick the places went. We already have an extensive waiting list,” he says. “I guess much of it is about being part of a World Championship and running alongside some of the best ultra-runners on the planet.”
The World Championships happen every two years. International teams from over 40 nations took part in the last Championships in Turin in 2015. More are expected in Belfast next year.
