Waterside Half Marathon 2017:
On Sunday 3rd September 2017, nearly two thousand athletes took to the streets of Derry/Londonderry for the 36th annual running of the famous Waterside Half Marathon.
The seemingly endless field negotiated a course which hugged the banks of the River Foyle, taking in Gransha Grounds, the Foyle Bridge, Fort George, Foyle Valley Railway Museum and the Peace Bridge, before crossing the river and into the St Columbs Park track and the finish.
Pre-race favourites, Freddy Sittuk (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Catherine Whoriskey (City of Derry AC), proved unstoppable and successfully defended their titles.
Freddy led the field home, but did not have it all his own way. Local hero Declan Reed (City of Derry AC) made the Kenyan star work hard for the victory. After an excellent dual, Freddy edged victory in a sprint finish, crossing the line in 1:09:18 (1st place). Declan followed just one second later in 1:09:19 (2nd place), before Scott Rankin (Foyle Valley AC) completed the top three in 1:10:18 (3rd place).
In the ladies race, the always impressive Catherine Whoriskey (City of Derry AC) retained her title in fine fashion. The Northern Ireland and Ireland international clocked 1:20:41 (1st place) for top honours. Deborah Gray (Bellahouston Road Runners) secured the runners up prize in 1:29:04 (2nd place), while Letterkenny AC’s Catherine McKinley proved a popular prize-winner when she completed the route in 1:29:54 (3rd place).
