Snowdon International Mountain Race 2017:
On Saturday 15th July 2017, a team of eight Northern Ireland athletes were in action at the 42nd annual running of the prestigious Snowdon International Mountain Race in Wales.
On a day of good performances for the Northern Ireland team, it was Gavin Mulholland (Calder Valley Fell Runners) and Megan Wilson (Dark Peak Fell Runners / East Down AC) who excelled, with both finishing in or around the top ten in their respective races.
Against top quality opposition, England based Gavin narrowly missed a top ten spot when he covered the 16k distance and 994m of ascent in 1:12:57 for 11th place. Timothy Johnston (Mourne Runners) and David Hicks (Newcastle AC) finished just seconds apart, with Timothy crossing the line in 1:17:09 (27th place) and David in 1:17:43 (32nd place). Connor Reid (Ballymena Runners) completed the NI team in 1:26:07 (84th place). The race was won by Italian athlete Davide Magnini in 1:06:43 (1st place).
In the ladies race, which was won by Ambleside AC’s Annie Baumber in 1:20:16 (1st place), rising star Megan secured an excellent 10th place in 1:27:31. Just twenty three seconds split experienced international’s Shileen O’Kane (Lagan Valley AC) and Diane Wilson (Dromore AC), who both performed to their usual high standard – Diane clocked 1:30:36 for 13th place and Shileen followed in 1:30:59 for 14th place. Ciara Largey (LVO) also ran well, taking 20th place in 1:35:42
