Gemma McDonald leads the way as nearly 400 athletes take on Ballymena Belles 5!

Ballymena Belles 5 mile Road Race 2018:

Ballycastle Runners star Gemma McDonald secured top spot as nearly 400 competitors took on the 5th annual Ballymena Belles 5 mile road race in Glagorm, Ballymena (Tuesday 10th April 2018).

Early on, Gemma was joined at the head of the field by Paula Worthington (Ballymena Runners), Tracey Atkinson (Albertville Harriers), Jenny Finlay (Lagan Valley AC) and Leanne Sands (Acorns AC).

However, as the race progressed, the five became three with Jenny and Leanne dropping back.  Gemma continued to forge the pace and eventually opened a short gap, which ultimately proved enough to secure victory by fifteen seconds.

Gemma broke the tape in 32:15, with former junior international Paula Worthington claiming the runners up prize in 32:30 (2nd place).  Improving Northern Ireland masters international Tracey Atkinson recorded 32:35 for 3rd place, with Leanne Sands taking 4th place in 34:04.

Experienced Springwell Running Club athlete Karen McLaughlin came through well to complete the top five in 34:29 (5th place).
