Marty’s Run 5k Road Race 2017:
On Sunday 1st October 2017, nearly seven hundred athletes turned out for the annual Marty’s 5k road race in Northern Ireland’s maiden city, Derry/Londonderry.
This was the eighth year of the event which is held in memory of Marty Gallagher, a much respected and gifted member of Foyle Valley Athletic Club who lost his life tragically in 2009 – with the number of athletes who have supported the event since it started set to go through 5,000 at this years race, there was a prize for the 5,000th finisher; this was collected by Michael Connor of Bolt Running Club, who finished in 108th place in 23:08.
At the head of the pack, Kenyan athlete Gideon Kipsang (Derry Track Club), winner of yesterday’s Bangor 10k, led the field come in an impressive 15:05 (1st place). The host club’s Scott Rankin (Foyle Valley AC) followed in 15:12 for 2nd place. Fellow Foyle Valley AC man Adrian McGowan showed that he is getting back to full fitness with a 16:26 for 3rd place.
In the ladies race, local hero Catherine Whoriskey (City of Derry AC) took top honours, breaking the tape in 18:07 for 1st place. 16 year old Anna McGinley (Foyle Valley AC) secured the runners up prize in 19:47 (2nd place), while Martina McMullan (Foyle Valley AC) completed the top three in 19:53 (3rd place).
