Memorial 5k Road Race 2017:
On Friday 15th September 2017, well over one hundred athletes descended on Gransha Grounds in Northern Ireland’s maiden city, Derry/Londonderry, for the inaugural Memorial 5k road race. The race was organised as a memorial for local athletes who have sadly passed away recently.
At the head of the pack, Kenyan star Gideon Kipsang (Derry Track Club) warmed up for Sunday’s Belfast City Half Marathon with a comfortable victory. Gideon glided home in 15:30 (1st place). Acorns AC’s Eoin Hughes impressed with a 15:43 clocking for 2nd place, while Darragh Crossan (Foyle Valley AC) continued his recent good form with a personal best of 16:08 for 3rd place.
In the ladies race, local hero and WCM Champion Catherine Whoriskey (City of Derry AC) excelled with a dominant performance. Catherine broke the tape in 17:41, which saw her secure 1st place in the ladies race and 9th place overall. Derry Track Club’s Lisa McLaughlin crossed the line in 20:12 (2nd place), with Spartan Clare Harkin (City of Derry AC) completing the top three in 20:24 (3rd place).
