Gold Coast bound Emma Mitchell stars as local athletes impress at AIT International Grand Prix 2018!

AIT International Grand Prix 2018:

Queen’s University of Belfast AC athlete Emma Mitchell (Eamonn Christie) was again the star performer as local athletes lined up against top opposition from around the world at last night’s AIT International Indoor Grand Prix in Athlone, Ireland (Wednesday 21st February 2018).

The Gold Coast bound athlete recorded a new 1500m indoor personal best of 4:14.54 to secure 4th place in the race won by European Junior and Under 23 silver medalist Sofia Ennaoui (Poland) in 4:10.63 (1st place).

This follows on from Emma’s impressive outings at the Armagh International and a gold medal performance over 1500m at the AAI National Indoor Championships, where she ran 4:16.53.  Interestingly, Emma’s previous metric mile indoor personal best of 4:15.32 was run at the AIT International Grand Prix in 2017.

After the race, Emma posted on social media:  “Great Night @aitsport #Aitgrandprix PB is a PB. Now back to 10,000m Racing!”

In the same (1500m) event, former World Masters 800m Champion Kelly Neely (City of Lisburn AC) produced an eye catching performance, clocking her second quickest ever 1500m indoor time of 4:16.25 for 7th place.

There was also encouraging performances by Dean Adams (Ballymena & Antrim AC / Alan Kennedy) and Mollie Courtney (Cheltenham AC / David Warner).

In the 60m, Dean booked his place in the final with a 6.84 for 4th place in the heats, before breaking the beam in 6.88 (8th place) in the final – Jamaican competitor Ryan Shields won in 6.63 (1st place).

Mollie was in competition over the 60m hurdles, where she recorded 8.40 (3rd place) in the heats and 8.46 for 6th place in the final.  The 60m hurdles top prize went to Lindsay Lindley (Nigeria), who ran 8.04 for 1st place.
