James Trainor and Jessica Craig record fastest times of the night at NiRunning Mile 2018!

NiRunning Mile 2018:

On Friday 4th May 2018, almost two hundred athletes descended on the home of athletics in Northern Ireland, the Mary Peters Track, for the 6th annual ‘NiRunning Mile’ event, which once again was endorsed by the highly respected British Milers Club (BMC).

The famous sub four minute barrier was not broken on this occasion, nor were the event records of 4:19.03 and 4:56.60, set my Mark Hoy (Finn Valley AC) and Rachel Gibson (North Down AC) respectively.

However, the gathered spectators were treated to an exciting night of racing, which culminated in James Trainor (North Belfast Harriers) and Jessica Craig (North Down AC) picking up the top prizes.

In a closely contested Elite Men’s Mile, James saw off a strong challenge from Glen Taylor (Ballydrain Harriers) and Darrell McKee (Acorns AC) to win in 4:35.79 (1st place), the fastest time of the night.  Glen clocked 4:36.67 for 2nd place, while Darrell claimed 3rd place in 4:38.56.

Jessica Craig stormed to victory in the ladies competition and missed a sub-5 minute mile by the narrowest of margins, when crossing the line in 5:00.10 for 1st place in the ladies category.  Laura Bickerstaff (Dromore AC) and Catherine Diver (Beechmount Harriers), both competing in Race 12 of 17, recorded the next fastest times.  Laura won the race in 5:10.78, which was enough for 2nd place on the night – Catherine followed in 5:16.67, which saw her claimed 3rd place in the ladies category.

North Down AC’s Terry Eakin clocked the fastest time for a Vet65 athlete in the UK this year when he crossed the line in 5:55.43 (Race 10).

The evening kicked off with two junior ‘fun mile’ races coordinated by Allstars NI Sports Academy, before the more competitive athletes took to the start-line.
