Groomsport Half Marathon & 10k 2017:
On Saturday 12th August 2017, hundreds of athletes from across Northern Ireland took on the penultimate race of the Pure Running-ChampionChip Ireland Half Marathon Series (excluding Belfast City Half Marathon, which is a wildcard), the Groomsport Half Marathon; the race programme also included a 10k race.
Both races started in Groomsport and made their way into rural parts of the coastal village before finishing just off the scenic coastal path close to the Groomsport Marina.
North Belfast Harriers new boy Joe Malone took top honours in the 13.1 mile event, leading the field into the picturesque finishing straight in 1:18:10 (1st place). Orangegrove AC’s Andrew McIntyre claimed 2nd place in 1:19:29, while David Proctor (Willowfield Harriers) completed the top three in 1:20:58.
In ladies race half marathon event, Jillian Redpath of Dromore AC had the race of her life to win in a new personal best of 1:34:40 (1st place). North Down AC’s ever-consistent Catherine Roberts crossed the line in 1:36:57 for 2nd place, with Newry City Runnners’ Roisin Rocks taking 3rd place in 1:39:35.
In the 10k race, Northern Ireland Masters international Mark Walker (Unattached) continued his good form from the recent Belfast 24 hour Race with another excellent performance. Mark won in 38:10 (1st place), with David Massey (39:07) of North Down AC following in 2nd place. Gerry Irvine (Unattached) crossed the line in 39:36 for 3rd place.
Laura Beattie (Willowfield Harriers) had an excellent run to win the ladies race in 47:15 (1st place). Judith Taylor (Unattached) impressed with a 47:40 clocking for 2nd place, before North Down AC’s Jane Stevenson recorded 48:28 for 3rd place.
