John Black and Kelly Neely claim top honours at County Down 5k!

County Down 5k Road Race 2018:

John Black (North Belfast Harriers) and Kelly Neely (City of Lisburn AC) claimed the top prizes in the feature Elite Race at the 2nd annual County Down 5k Road Race in Downpatrick (Sunday 18th November 2018).

Sarah Murray (Island Runners) and Barry Kelly (Unattached) won Race 1 and Race 2 respectively, before the elite athletes took to the start line for their feature event.

John Black saw off tough opposition in the form of Eoin Hughes (Acorns AC), Gerard Heaney (Acorns AC) and Steven McAlary (City of Derry AC) as he emerged victorious.  After a close race, John broke the tape in 15:21 (1st place), with Eoin following in 15:24 (2nd place).  Steven completed the top three in 15:34 (3rd place).

The highly competitive ladies race saw five athletes go well under 19 minutes, with double World Masters Champion Kelly Neely leading the way in 17:28 (1st place).  Rachel Gibson (North Down AC), a podium placer at the event in 2017, followed in 17:34 (2nd place).  In an epic battle for 3rd place, Sarah Grant (North Down AC) edged out Sinead Sweeney (QUB AC), with both ladies finishing on 17:42.
