Jonny Steede and Gillian Wasson claim prestigious Lurig Challenge titles!

Lurig Challenge Mountain Race 2018:

Northern Ireland international mountain runners Jonny Steede (Glens Runners) and Gillian Wasson (Ballymena Runners) picked up the top prizes as hundreds of athletes took on the popular Lurig Challenge Mountain Race, hosted by Glens Runners (Saturday 11th August 2018).

The atmospheric event, which measures approximately 3.5 miles in distance, with 375 metres of ascent is part of a week-long festival in the area and will see a mix of mountain, road and fun runners convene for a classic ‘to the top and back’ course.

Participants started in the centre of the village, making their way through the assembled crowds and up a series of steps onto a gradually ascending farm lane, before reaching the open mountain. Once onto the grassy slopes, runners then climbed the steep north face of Lurgethan, before descending from the summit and making their way back to the village finish line.

There was no stopping Jonny Steede as he retained his title from last year in 29:09 (1st place).  Mourne Runners athlete Timothy Johnston claimed 2nd place in 29:37, before Connor Reid (Ballymena Runners) continued his recent good form with a 30:57 finish for 3rd place.

In the ladies race, Gillian Wasson, who last won the event in 2016, sealed an impressive victory, breaking the tape in 34:57 (1st place).  The host club’s Catherine McLaughlin and Lucy O’Dell completed the ladies podium.  Catherine recorded 36:50 for 2nd place, with Lucy following in 39:43 (3rd place).
