European Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships 2018:
Recently crowned NI & Ulster Masters XC Champion Catherine Diver (Beechmount Harriers) was one of a number of local athletes who picked up medals at the recent European Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in Madrid, Spain (19th – 24th March 2018).
Catherine claimed a well-deserved bronze medal over 1500m, clocking 4:55.06 for 3rd place in the competitive Vet40 category. The Northern Ireland Masters international then picked up a team silver medal in the 5k Cross Country, where she narrowly missed a podium place when crossing the line in 19:48 for 4th place.
In the Vet35 1500m, Denise Toner (Clones AC) ran 4:43.20 for 2nd place and the associated silver medal – Denise then followed this up with a team silver in the cross country event.
Decorated Masters athlete Cathal McLaughlin (Derry Track Club) battled through a chest infection to pick up a podium place in the Vet50 1500, running 4:23.56 (3rd place).
Paul Blaney (Beechmount Harriers), Timothy Shiels (Derry Track Club) and Shane King (Clones AC) also impressed with quality performances. Paul claimed a Vet45 team silver in the cross country, while Timothy and Shane were part of the 4 x 200m team who clocked a new Irish Vet40 record of 1:37.83; this was enough to see the team finish just outside the medals in 4th place.
