Local athletes perform well at gruelling Lakeland 100!

Lakeland 100 Mountain-Trail Race 2018:

Several Northern Ireland based athletes completed the gruelling Lakeland 100 Mountain-Trail Race in the Lake District (England) this weekend (Friday 27th and Saturday 28th July 2018).

The local competitors joined almost 500 fellow ultra-runners as they negotiated the tough 105 mile course which incorporated over 7,000m of ascent.

After starting the race in soaring heat, the field braved a night of thunderstorms and the following day’s torrential rain showers as they covered the famous loop of the Lakes, starting and finishing in Coniston.

Northern Ireland and Ireland international Justin Maxwell (East Coast AC) came through the field well to finish in 28:39:15, just ahead of experienced and respected endurance specialist Dale Mathers (Mourne Runners), who clocked 29:14:22 for the course. Jonathan Gibson (Unattached) crossed the line in 29:46:14.

In the associated Lakeland 50 mile race, Mourne Runners athlete Denise Mathers ran well, recording 12:46:23 for the distance.
