Local runners help Team Ireland to high ranking at European 24-hour Championships!

European 24-hour Championships 2018:

Local runners Eddie Gallen (Finn Valley AC), Louise Smart (County Antrim Harriers) and Susan McCartney (BARF) helped a strong Ireland team to high rankings in the team competition at the European 24-hour Championships in Romania at the weekend (Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th May 2018).

Belfast native Eddie Gallen was part of the men’s team who claimed a top ten finish, taking 8th place in the highly competitive men’s competition.  In total, Ireland’s three scoring athletes covered 663.81k in the 24 hours.

The individual men’s distances and places were:

Eoin Keith – 232.65k (19th place)
Aidan Hogan – 218.02k (31st place)
Eddie Gallen – 213.13k (36th place)
Alex O’Shea – 175.53k (60th place)

In the ladies race, the always impressive duo of Louise Smart and Susan McCartney played their part in helping the team to a very credible 13th place, with the three scoring athletes accumulating 464.55k – this was all the more impressive given that Susan was forced to withdraw from the event after 4 hours due to an injury.

The individual ladies distances and places were:

Amy Masner – 220.85k (10th place)
Louise Smart – 204.57k (22nd place)
Susan McCartney – 39.12k (71st place)
