Mark Long leads local contingent home at Berlin Marathon!

Berlin Marathon 2018:

City of Derry AC’s Mark Long led a large number of local competitors home at last weekend’s Berlin Marathon in Germany (Sunday 16th September 2018).

Mark, who began his marathon career back in 2011 with a 3:23:33 finish at the Belfast City Marathon recorded an excellent 2:31:43 – this took nearly four minutes off his personal best of 2:35:27 which he set at the Dublin Marathon last year (2017).

There was also an exceptional performance by Newcastle AC’s Patrick Higgins who smashed his previous 2:39:40 (Dublin Marathon 2017) personal best when he crossed the finish line in 2:36:33.  Albertville Harriers’ marathon regular Colum Gaile recorded 2:41:34 for the distance.

In the ladies race, Northern Ireland mountain running international Mari Troeng (Newcastle AC) slashed her 26.2 mile best by five minutes as she clocked 2:59:18.

There was a large Northern Ireland representation at the event – full results can be found HERE.

The race will of course be remembered for Eliud Kipchoge’s new World Record of 2:01:39.
