Mark McKinstry and Gladys Ganiel O’Neill secure top honours at Mayfair 10k!

Ballyclare Mayfair 10k & 5k Road Race:

North Belfast Harriers duo Mark McKinstry and Gladys Ganiel O’Neill secured top honours as in excess of 450 athletes took on annual Ballyclare Mayfair 10k and 5k road races (Saturday 26th May 2018) in Ballyclare, a well-organised event hosted by County Antrim Harriers.

In tough windy conditions, Mark McKinstry dominated at the head of the pack.  The Northern Ireland international, who recorded 15:00 for 5k earlier this week in Buncrana, gradually increased his lead as the race progressed.  He relentlessly covered the undulating course, before returning to the Ballyclare RFC HQ finish area, breaking the tape in 33:06 (1st place).

Behind, East Antrim Harriers new recruit Matthew Hewitt claimed a well deserved 2nd place in 36:37, before veteran athlete David Clarke of North Belfast Harriers crossed the line in 36:51 for 3rd place.

Fellow North Belfast Harriers athlete Gladys Ganiel O’Neill followed closely, retaining her title in impressive fashion.  The European Athletics Championships bound marathoner clocked 37:02 for 1st place in the ladies race and 4th place overall.

In-form Gemma McDonald (Ballycastle Runners) again showed her class, with another podium place.  After an impressive outing at the Maghera 10k in midweek, Gemma showed no signs of fatigue as she claimed the runners up spot in 40:38 (2nd place).  Larne AC’s Patricia Blair ran well to secure 3rd place in 42:25.

In the associated 5k event, emerging athletes Aaron Callaghan (East Coast AC) and Jana Ross (County Antrim Harriers) showed their potential.  Aaron led the men home in 17:54 (1st place), while Jana won the ladies race in 20:34 (1st place).
