Mark McKinstry and Julie Murphy win 94th annual Whitehead 5 mile Road Race!

Whitehead 5 mile Road Race 2018:

Mark McKinstry (North Belfast Harriers) and Julie Murphy (Lagan Valley AC) were the shining stars as athletes braved wet, windy and cold conditions to conquer the 94th annual Whitehead 5 mile road race in County Antrim on Easter Monday (Monday 2nd April 2018).

In the men’s race, Mark looked a class act as he dominated from start to finish, securing top honours in an excellent 25:43 (1st place).  Behind, Ben Branagh (St Malachy’s AC) marked his return to competitive action with a well-deserved 2nd place, after covering the three lap course in 26:15.  Kent Swann (North Belfast Harriers) completed the top three in 29:21 (3rd place).

In a closely contested ladies race, Lagan Valley AC’s Julie Murphy saw off a strong challenge from in-form Susan Smyth (Dromore AC) to win.  Julie recorded 33:01 for 1st place, with Susan finishing just two seconds later in 33:03 (2nd place).  Suzanne Higgins, another Lagan Valley AC athlete, followed closely, taking 3rd place in 33:35
