Martin Cox and Paula Donnelly lead the way at Paul Murray GP 5k!

Paul Murray Grand Prix 5k Series (Race 2) – report submitted by organisers:

The second race in the Paul Murray 5k Grand Prix Series took place on Friday evening (15th June 2018) at Eskra. The cooler conditions were more favourable for the 274 runners and walkers who took on a different rolling 5k route through the narrow country roads. The crowd were treated to a brilliant display of running as the in-form Martin Cox (Carmen Runners) took control of the race and finished in a superb time of 15:24, next across the finish line was Vincent McAlister (Acorns AC) in a time of 16:19 and taking third place Paul Barbour in a time of 16:35.

First female over the line in a competitive race was Paula Donnelly who broke 19 minutes in excellent time of 18:59. Paula just held off local athlete Grainne O’Hagan (Knockmany Running Club) in a time of 19:07 and completing the podium in third place was Michelle Donnelly (DTC) with a time of 20:09.

The young athlete Tristan Kelly (Carmen Runners) continues to impress winning the Under 18 category in a time of 18:10 and Cadhla McCarroll (Eskra GAA) winning Under 18 Female with a time of 23:23. Winners of Under 12 Categories were Daire Breen and Aoibheann Shevlin (Knockmany Running Club)

With two races still to go it’s all to play for in the overall Paul Murray 5k Grand Prix Series. Having completed two races in the men’s series Paul Barbour, Adrian Scullion (Knockmany Running Club) and Michael Kerr (Carmen Runners) are currently in contention. Whilst the Female Grand Prix Winner should come from Paula Donnelly, Grainne O’Hagan (Knockmany Running Club) and Michelle Donnelly (DTC) who occupied the same podium positions in the two races so far.

The other category winners were Micheal Kerr (Carmen Runners) Male O40, Paddy Corr (Acorns AC) Male O50 and Gerry McGaffrey (Knockmany Running Club) Male O60. Deirdre Haigney (Knockmany Running Club) Female O40, Angela Arkinson (Knockmany Running Club) Female O50 and Geraldine McCarron Female O60.

The Organisers Knockmany Running Club were once again overwhelmed with the large turnout and thank everyone for supporting the second race in the series. Organisers remind everyone is very welcome to the next two races at 7.30pm on Friday 22nd June and 29th June on different 5k routes. The Paul Murray 5K Grand Prix Series are raising funds for the Air Ambulance Northern Ireland charity. Registration is from 6-7pm in Eskra Community Centre. Entry Fee for individual race is £7 with refreshments served afterwards.
