Born 2 Run ‘Sea 2 Sky’ 10k 2017:
On Friday 14th July 2017, nearly eight hundred competitors took on the 6th annual running of the Born 2 Run Sea 2 Sky 10k and associated 5k race.
Athletes started on the picturesque promenade in Newcastle, before covering a tough course, which included a mixture of road, trail and single track as they climbed upwards towards the foothills of the Mourne Mountains. After climbing gradually to the 5k mark, the field were rewarded with stunning views over Newcastle and beyond before descending to finish on the award winning promenade.
As expected, Mourne Runners athlete David McKee ran out victorious – this was after a good battle with Neill Weir (Willowfield Harriers) and Kent Swann (North Belfast Harriers). In the end, David secured top honours with a twenty one second margin on Neill, crossing the the line in 35:21 (1st place). Neill followed in 35:42 (2nd place), before Kent completed the top three in 35:48 (3rd place).
In the ladies race, Laura Graham made it a Mourne Runners clean sweep of the top prizes with an impressive return to competitive action. The Belfast City Marathon winner looked a class act as she sealed 1st place in 38:37 (1st place). Amanda Perry (Ballydrain Harriers) ran well for 2nd place, completing the course in 42:23, while Joanne Graham (Mourne Runners) was rewarded for a strong performance with 3rd place in 43:46.
In the associated 5k race, William Kells (Mourne Runners) led the field home in 18:26 (1st place), a mere two seconds ahead of Newry City Runners’ Duddy Parr (2nd place – 18:28). Northern Ireland international mountain runner Esther Dickson (Newry AC) won the ladies race in 19:11 (1st place), which was enough for 3rd place overall.
