NI athletes named in Athletics Ireland IAAF World Indoor Championships team!

IAAF World Indoor Championships 2018:

Two Northern Ireland athletes have been named in the Athletics Ireland team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships, which will take place in Birmingham from the 1st – 4th March 2018.

Amy Foster (City of Lisburn AC / David Reid) and Ciara Mageean (UCD AC / Steve Vernon) will join Phil Healy (Bandon AC / Shane McCormack) and Ciara Neville (Emerald AC / Noelle Morrissey) in the four person team.  There could also be good news for local man Adam McMullen (Crusaders AC / Alan Kennedy) with Athletics Ireland hoping an invitation will be extended to the NI man following his exceptional recent form.

Amy Foster goes in the 60m having broke the national record with her 7.27 clocking at the Irish Life Health National Indoor Championships. The City of Lisburn AC athlete will line up in the event with up-and-coming sprinter Ciara Neville, who also holds the qualifying time from last year and has been in good form.

Multiple NI record holder Ciara Mageean will compete in the 1500m, an event which the New Balance athlete has run 4:01.46; a Northern Ireland record.

Another in-form athlete, Phil Healy, will race in the 400m competition.

High Performance Director Paul McNamara commented on the selection:

“It’s been an outstanding season of indoor athletics so far, with an array of exciting performances at this past weekend’s National Championships.

“Phil Healy has led the way this season and goes into these championships looking to augment her growing reputation.

“Amy Foster has had a superb indoor season, and after pushing out the National Record will go to Birmingham full of confidence.

“Similarly, Ciara Neville has been very consistent this season and will relish being on the world stage as she continues to build for the future.

“Ciara Mageean has had solid back to back performances in the US and will be ready to kick on from there after a 3 week run-in.

“We hope to see an invitation come from the IAAF for Adam McMullen, which would be huge boost for him and all our field event athletes.”
