Carrauntoohil Mountain Race 2018:

Northern Ireland athletes Seamus Lynch (Newcastle AC) and Ciara Largey (Unattached) claimed top honours as local athletes travelled to the famous Carrauntoohil Mountain Race in County Kerry (Ireland) last weekend (Saturday 2nd June 2018).

Standing at 1,038 metres, Carrauntoohil is Ireland’s highest peak and the race itself covers 12.5k in distance with 1,137 metres of ascent.

In the men’s race, Newcastle AC pair Seamus Lynch and Colm Murtagh produced excellent performances to secure 1st and 2nd place respectively.  Seamus led the 100 strong field home in 1:27:45 (1st place), with the fast finishing Colm taking the runners up prize in 1:31:34 (2nd place).

There was further success for local athletes in the ladies race, with familiar faces again taking two of the three podium places.  Well-respected mountain runner Ciara Largey dominated proceedings, winning by over ten minutes when crossing the line in 1:50:59 (1st place).  Newcastle AC’s Paulette Thomson also ran well to claim 3rd place in 2:13:09.

Elsewhere this weekend…

Northern Ireland man Eoin Lennon (Carnethy HRC) secured 2nd place at the Yetholm Hill Race in Scotland (Sunday 3rd June 2018).

The event, which is part of the Scottish Hill Running Championships, covered 12.8k in distance with 762m of ascent.

After an epic battle with Tom Owens (Salomon International / Shettleston Harriers), Eoin claimed the runners up prize in 1:04:45 – Tom won in 1:03:45 (1st place).
