IAU World Ultra-Trail Championships 2017:
On Saturday 10th June 2017, Northern Ireland based runners Ian Bailey (Newcastle AC), Justin Maxwell (East Coast AC) and Jackie Toal (BARF) represented Ireland at the IAU World Ultra-Trail Championships in Tuscany, Italy.
Alongside their team mates Paul Tierney, Barry Hartnett, Karina Jonina and Eilis Connery, the NI trio took on a gruelling 50k course which incorporated 2,980m of ascent.
The team performed well over the at times technical course in what was described as very warm conditions. Former Garmin Mourne Skyline MTR winner Ian Bailey led the team home in 5:23:06 (54th place). Experienced Irish international Paul Tierney followed in 5.37:41 (78th place), with Barry Hartnett and Justin Maxwell recording 5:52:57 (91st place) and 6:48:03 (131st place) respectively.
BARF’s Jackie Toal had an excellent run, covering the distance in 6:27:06 to secure 65th place in the ladies race. Eilis Connery (86th place – 7:10:10) and Karina Jonina (98th place – 7:52:45) completed the Ireland team.
Skyrunners dominated the podium places, with Luis Alberto Hernando (Spain) winning the men’s race in 4:23:31 (1st place) and Adeline Roche (France) taking the ladies title in 5:00:44 (1st place).
