Four members of the Northern Ireland Athletic team competed at the Queensland Track Classic, only one week after flying out to their base camp at Somerset College on the Gold Coast.

Adam McMullen believes his preparations for the Commonwealth Games are on course to pay off after the Northern Ireland long jump hopeful took fifth place at the high-quality Queensland Track and Field Classic meeting in Brisbane on Wednesday.

And Adam’s leap of 7.78 metres left him in buoyant mood. “It was my biggest-ever season opener,” he said. “There are still a few technical issues that can be adjusted. But things are looking good for the championships in two weeks.”

Leon Reid claimed there “positives to take” from two season’s bests in as many races with the Bath-based sprinter coming second in the men’s 200 metres in 20.90 secs, just behind English rival Zharnel Hughes – an hour after landing third in his 100m race in 10.75.

Amy Foster was fourth in the women’s 100m in 11.81 secs while heptathlon hopeful Kate O’Connor’s own double saw her land sixth spot in the 100m hurdles in 14.82 secs (a new personal best by 0.13secs) and the same position in the 200m in 25.64.

The track and field competition, featuring a 13-strong Northern Ireland team, begins on Sunday April 8.
