North Down AC and Foyle Valley AC win Athletics NI XC League 2017/18!

North Down AC and Foyle Valley AC win Athletics NI League 2017/18 (by Athletics NI):

Last Saturday (24th February 2018) saw the final fixture in the 2017-18 Athletics Northern Ireland Cross Country League: the NI and Ulster Senior Cross Country Championships at Lurgan Park with a record number of competitors taking part.  Double points were on offer and this proved to be a major incentive with 15 teams finishing in the Women’s section and 16 in the Men’s.

Once the overall league positions were calculated North Down AC emerged as easy winners of the Women’s section with a final tally of 236 points. However the battle for the runners-up was much more exciting with Foyle Valley AC just pipping East Down AC by 5 points (179 to 174) and Acorns AC not far behind on 164.

The men’s section was also very competitive and in the end Foyle Valley AC emerged victorious over North Belfast Harriers by only 6 points (236 to 230) with Springwell Running Club (222) and Willowfield Harriers (211) not far behind.

This season’s league has once again proved to be very successful with very pleasing numbers of runners and clubs taking part in all 8 rounds and an all-time record of competitors in the Senior Championships last weekend.

The ANI Cross Country and Road Running Committee will be meeting shortly to look at arrangements for next season’s league and would welcome suggestions or comments from clubs or athletes on how the league might be improved or enhanced.  Comments or suggestions should be sent to [email protected] before the end of April 2018.
