Over 800 Pupils Attend Sportshall Events

09 April 2020, from Athletics NI

Over the last couple of months, the Athletics NI coaching team have delivered their annual Sportshall Athletics events, which are a Sport Northern Ireland Lottery Funded Everybody Active 2020 Initiative.

The Sportshall heats took place in seven regions across Northern Ireland including Newry, Downpatrick, Belfast, Antrim and Newtownabbey. The team have also been delighted to facilitate events in the Lisburn & Castlereagh and the North Down & Ards Council areas as part of the ongoing relationship with the councils and to sustain the legacy of the Active Communities project.

The events attracted approximately 800 primary school children from over 75 schools. There was a range of activities that included speed bounce, standing long jump, sprints races, mixed agility relays and endurance races. These events were led by our Every Body Active Coaches, University Development Officer and Coach & Club Development Officer.

The top 8 boys and top 8 girls from each heat then qualified for the National Sportshall Final to represent their region. Sadly, our National Final has had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We hope this can go ahead at a future date and will be in contact with the finalists if this is the case.

We hope to continue to expand at this stage of the development pathway, which helps to develop another generation of athletes, by sign posting children towards other Athletics NI initiatives such as the Rising Stars programme, EBA Event Group Squads, upcoming Summer training camps as well as the popular Firmus & North Down Track & Field Leagues once athletic activity recommences following the current COVID-19 situation.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the Sporthall competitions, with a special mention to the students from the Belfast Metropolitan College and South Eastern Regional College for their help. These students are currently studying towards their respective Sport related courses and have been developing their skills in an athletics environment while volunteering at the competitions.
