Queen’s University will host IUAA Track & Field Championships this weekend!

Irish Universities Athletics Association (IUAA) Track & Field Championships 2018:

This weekend (Friday 13th and Saturday 14th April 2018) will see some of the Northern Ireland and Ireland’s top student athletes take to the famous Mary Peters Track as Queen’s University of Belfast host the prestigious Irish Universities Athletics Association (IUAA) Track & Field Championships 2018.

Queen’s University last hosted the Inter Varsity competition in Northern Ireland back in 1999 and following it’s success, it is expected that this years event will prove popular with both athletes and spectators alike.

Entries for the student event close tonight, Wednesday 11th April 2018 at 10pm (they are available HERE).

QUB AC themselves boast a wealth of athletic talent – just this week, their own club member Emma Mitchell bettered her own Northern Ireland 10,000m record at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.  This will no doubt inspire the host team as they go into the hunt for silverware.

Recent NI & Ulster 5k (Road) Champion Neil Johnston is expected to be amongst those competing for Queen’s University.

Another Northern Ireland university competing will be Ulster of University and they also have a significant interest on the Gold Coast in the form of sprinter Amy Foster.  Strong background work by coaches at Ulster University will mean that they will be taking their biggest team to the Championships in 10 years.

Familiar faces such as Matt Doherty, Niamh Malone and James Smyth are just a few of their medal hopefuls.

A full programme of events is available HERE.

A preview of the event will be included in our NiRunning ‘Weekend Preview’, which will be available on Friday 13th April 2018 (AM).

The competition will finish with a prize-giving at the Hilton Hotel in Belfast.
