Scrabo Striders Storm Carrick Castle

The “Storming the Castle” 10K road race and Kids Fun Run took place on Sunday 25th August in Carrickfergus in unbroken sunshine and 24 degree temperatures.  Now in it’s fifth year this very popular event saw 800 runners start the fantastic, fast, flat course at the Amphitheatre, encompassing the picturesque promenade along Marine Highway and waterfront areas, overlooking the world class marina and views of Belfast Lough before finishing at the impressive 12th Century Norman Castle near Carrickfergus Town centre.

Scrabo Striders had 100 entrants, a fabulous turnout. First Strider home was Ricky Jordan in 39 minutes 29 seconds earing him 17th place overall. Then came Jason Lindsay in 41:12, Jonny Kinney 41:44, David Stevenson 42:59, Tim McEwan 43:19 and Norman Mawhinney in 43:59.  Abrar Hossain, Peter McGonigal, Colin Harper, Matthew Cavill, Graeme McGowan and David Turton recorded sub 48 minute times.

In the ladies race first across the line for Scrabo was Cheryl Mulholland in 50:19, followed by Barbara McKechnie in 51:29 and taking 1st in her category. Third lady finisher was Victoria Atkinson in 52:16. Never was the water station more welcome as runners found it tough going in the heat and lack of shade, so well done to all and thanks for representing the club so well. Also a big thanks to Seapark AC, the Council, the PSNI and of course the Marshals for making the race such a success. The post-race hot dogs were most welcome.

At other weekend events Thomas Steele completed the Strangford 10K in 43:04 while Norman Mawhinney finished the Portrush 5 Mile in 33 minutes 2 seconds taking overall 36th place, followed in for Scrabo by Mark Arnold in 39:01, Paul morrow 39:09, Mark Leathem 40:29, Liz Turton 43:42 and Wendy Thompson in 48:26. Showing true dedication to their sport Kerri Anderson and Amanda Martin boarded the ferry to complete the 10 Mile Rathlin Run in 01:30:13 and 01:35:38 respectively.
