Tenth Anniversary of the 26 Extreme Causeway Coast Marathon

It’s the tenth anniversary of the 26 Extreme Causeway Coast Marathon and this year it’s on the 28th September.  With a 40-mile Ultra Marathon, marathon, half marathon and 10km the event regularly attracts over 1000 competitors to the Causeway Coast for the opportunity to run through the world-famous World Heritage Site of the Giants Causeway.

Spaces in this year’s event have been filling up quickly with just a few remaining for each of the distances.  For those who would like to take on the challenge of the Causeway at a more sedate pace there is a charity challenge walk with Cancer Focus NI the beneficiary of everyone’s efforts.

With Translink transferring competitors to the start, the days exertions begin with the Ultra Marathon on Portstewart Strand at 7.30am and continue throughout the day as the other distances start culminating in a party atmosphere at the Village Hall in Portballintrae, where everybody will finish and enjoy 26 Extremes well established hospitality and entertainment.

A new development this year is the appearance of ‘Ambassadors’ in the Ultra Marathon, Marathon and Half Marathon.  As the event now attracts competitors from all around the UK, Europe and further afield, 26 Extreme will be utilising some of Springwell Running Clubs most experienced Causeway Marathoners to provide advice and guidance on the twists, turns and climbs of the coastal path.

26 Extreme are very conscious of the impact an event of this size has on the environment and have always operated a “leave no trace” policy and in 2018 received the “Plastic Smart” award from the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council for their “Mission Compostable”, as they removed single use plastic bottles and cups from the event, replacing them with cups made from compostable materials.  This year the ‘Packaging Centre’ in Omagh will once again be one of the events sponsors, providing compostable cups.

26 Extreme looks forward to welcoming all competitors and spectators to the Causeway Coast on the 28th September for what will prove to be another day of spectacular trail running.
