Mourne Mountain Rescue Team Donard Wood 5 mile Trail Race 2018:

On Saturday 17th February 2018, nearly one hundred athletes turned out for the Donard Wood 5 mile Trail Race in the Mourne Mountains, an event organised to raise funds for the invaluable Mourne Mountain Rescue Team.

Starting in Donard Park, the runners followed the Donard Trail to the climb up the Granite Trail steps, were they ascended the old Bogie Line to the top of Donard Park. From this point, the field made their way across the short mountain path to the viewpoint at Thomas’s Quarry. The route then followed the trail along the top of Donard Park over to the race’s highpoint at the top of Drinnahilly. It was all downhill from there, as competitors descended to Donard Park and the finish line.  The course measured 5 miles in distance and included approximately 300m of ascent.

At the head of the pack, it was Mourne Runners pair Timmy Johnston and Sarah Graham who excelled.  Well-known trail runner Timmy sealed a comfortable victory, crossing the line in 31:15 (1st place).  Newcastle AC’s David McNeilly took 2nd place in 32:48 (2nd place), before Jonny Scott (Mourne Runners) completed the top three in 33:06 (3rd place).
