Timothy Johnston and Esther Dickson secure top honours at Spelga Skyline Mountain Race!

Spelga Skyline Mountain Race 2018:

On Saturday 30th June 2018, mountain runners from across Northern Ireland descended on the picturesque Spelga Dam for the sixth installment of the Northern Ireland Mountain Running Association (NIMRA) Championship, the Spelga Skyline Mountain Race (Saturday 30th June 2018).

In blistering conditions, the athletes faced a course which measured 12.4 miles in distance and included 1,400m of ascent.

Newcastle AC’s David Hicks led early on but it was Mourne Runners man Timothy Johnston who came through and took charge as the athletes approached Checkpoint 3 at Slieve Muck.  Timothy never looked back as he saw off the strong challenge from Neil Andrews (East Down AC) to secure a well-deserved victory in 2:46:19 (1st place).  Neil followed in 2:48:46 for 2nd place, before Mark Stephens (LVO) was rewarded for a strong finished with a podium place – Mark completed the top three in 2:58:50 (3rd place).

In the ladies race, Esther Dickson (Newry AC) dominated as expected.  The Northern Ireland international led ffrom start to finish, winning in 3:08:12 (1st place); this was enough to see Esther take 5th place overall.  The always impressive Shileen O’Kane (Lagan Valley AC) crossed the line in 3:12:13 for 2nd place, while Ballymena Runners’ Gillian Wasson continued her excellent recent form with a 3:20:48 finish for 3rd place.
