Waterside Half Marathon Preview

Sunday’s 38th staging of the Waterside Half Marathon will once again host the NI & Ulster championships with the 2000 odd field including many seasoned club runners chasing individual and team honours.
Its looking like a fourth successive  Kenyan win. Freddy Sittuk won the last three but is absent this year and Gideon Kimosop heads the 2019 entry list. The Enniskillen based Kenyan  is expected to see off what will be a totally North West challenge from a strong City of Derry Spartans and Foyle Valley male contingent.
Declan Reed, Scott Rankin, Gary Slevin and Kyle Doherty could be the other prime male podium contenders and will be central to how the team race  pans out. It is a straight shoot out between the two local clubs for bragging rights and championship honours– should be some battle.
Defending female champion Anne Marie McGlynn of Letterkenny AC is odds on to retain her title with the other podium positions probably being contested by Gemma McDonald of Ballycastle Runners, local athletes Marina Murphy of Derry TC, the Spartans Gemma McGinty, Donore Harriers Sinead Lambe and Aine Hughes from Beechmount Harriers.
Former WHM Wheelchair winner Jim Corbett travels from Bambridge to take on locals Karol Doherty and James Divin and this should be a thriller.
The Wheelchair athletes go at 9 55am and the runners at 10am from the start line in the historic Ebrington Square, the course winds around the banks of the Foyle crossing the iconic Peace Bridge to the finish in St Columbs Park.
