Weekend Roundup Barcelona Half & University Indoors

Members of the Athletics Northern Ireland Marathon Potential 2024 competed at the Barcelona Half Marathon this weekend, with some strong finishing times despite the bracing winds along the home straight.

First across the line for the Men’s team was Eoghan Totten (Newcastle & District AC) who finished in 1:05.00. Next was City of Derry Spartans’ Conor Bradley who finished in a PB time of 1:05.36, followed by club mate, Kyle Doherty in a time of 1:10.59

For the Women’s team, NI’s Marathon and Half Marathon record holder, Ann-Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC) ran a solid time of 1:12.13, followed by Armagh Ac’s Fionnuala Ross who finished in 1:14.58 and City of Derry Spartans’ Catherine Whoriskey who finished in 1:19.55.

 Elsewhere this weekend…

This weekend a number of NI’s athletes represented their University clubs at the Irish University Indoors and BUCS indoors.

At the Irish University Indoors Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Dean Adams (competing for Ulster University) finished 1st in the Men’s 60m sprints in a new PB time of 6.73s, continuing his progress in arguably his best season to date. He also gained the Ulster University record, which was previously set in 1992 by Roger Sexton, with a time of 6.85s. This now moves him to 4th on the Irish all-time list and 2nd in the NI list, just behind Commonwealth Games athlete, Leon Reid.

Northern Irish javelin thrower, Gareth Crawford (UU) secured 3rd place in the Men’s Long Jump, jumping 6.82m, while Janine Boyle finished 5th in the Women’s 60m in 7.68s and 5th in the 200m in 25.51s. Ulster University’s Anna McIlmoyle finished 5th in the Women’s High Jump, clearing 1.60m.

The team had more reasons to celebrate as the Men’s 4x200m relay team of Connor Potts, Gareth Crawford, Matt Flynn, Michael McAuley finished in a new University record time of 93.56 in 7th place overall, while the Women’s team of Anna McIlmoyle, Emma Hutchinson, Eimear Fitzpatrick, Janine Boyle finished in 5th place in a time of 108.59.

Competing for QUB, Conall Kirk finished in 1st place in the Men’s 1500m with a PB time of 3:48.79, while Mark Burton (QUB) added to the medal collection by gaining 1st place in the Men’s Triple Jump with a jump of 14.46m. Lydia Mills (QUB) finished 3rd in the Women’s Long Jump with a jump of 5.56m.

In Sheffield at the BUCS Indoors, Loughborough University’s Megan Marrs finished 2nd in the Women’s 60m Hurdles in a season’s best time of 8.36s, while Ben Fisher finished 2nd in the Men’s Long Jump competition, with a jump of 7.07m. Adding another medal to Loughborough’s collection, Mid Ulster AC’s Grace Carson finished the Women’s 3000m in 3rd place in an indoor PB time of 9:51.13.
