Weekend Roundup – Track and Field and Mighty Oaks

Finn Valley AC’s John Kelly started the 2020 season with a new Ulster record at the weekend as he competed in the Senior Men’s Shot competition in Reykjavik, Iceland, throwing 18.15m. Club Mate and Commonwealth Games athlete, Sommer Lecky competed in the Senior Women’s High Jump competition clearing 1.76m.

In Scotland, Grace Carson (Mid Ulster AC/ Loughborough Uni) claimed 1st place at the BUCS Cross Country Championships in the Women’s Short race, finishing in a time of 22:06, while Craig McMeechan (North Down AC/ Queen’s Uni) completed the Men’s Long event in 34:57 in 57th place.

In the Scottish Athletics Combined Events Relays & Masters Championships on Saturday 1st February, City of Lisburn AC’s Anna McCauley secured a new PB and 2nd place in the U20 Women’s Pentathlon. The Youth Academy graduate finished with 3827 points.

Meanwhile this weekend…

Northern Ireland’s Cross Country athletes took part in the annual Mighty Oaks Cross Country, which was held in memory of the late Irwin Speirs with a minutes silence before the day’s events began.

The U12 Boys winner was Luke O’Doherty (Mid Ulster AC) who finished in 2:46, while the Girls winner was Aisling Loughran (Carmen AC) who finished in 3:25. In the U14 Girls Aisling Smith (Ballymena & Antrim AC) took 1st place in a time of 6:40 with Ben Proctor claiming the Boys race in a time of 7:47.

St Malachy’s AC’s Eoghan Breen took 1st place in the Boys U16 race in a time of 12:58, with Omagh Harriers’ Eimear McCarroll the 1st place girl in a time of 13:36. In the Masters Men O65 Newry City Runners Pat Rocks took 1st place in a time of 23:42.

In the Senior Men’s event, Timothy Johnston (Mourne Runners) came 1st in a time of 23:33, ahead of Acorns AC duo of Vincent McKenna in 24:25 and Darrell McKee in 25:01. Acorns AC claimed the team title on their home turf with a total of 36 points, just ahead of 2nd place, Armagh AC with 40 points.

In the Senior Ladies’ event, the top spot went to Beechmount Harriers’ Helen Lavery who finished in 20:38, followed by Karen Wilton (Jog Lisburn) in 2nd place in 20:55 and Leanne Gibson (Victoria Park & Connswater AC) in 21:48. The team prize went to Victoria Park & Connswater AC who finished with a total of 25 points, ahead of Armagh AC who finished with 27 points.
