International elite athletes to join over 1000 local runners in Coalisland for massively popular community event:
A host of international and commonwealth athletes including Emma Mitchell, Paddy Hamilton and 2017 Irish Marathon champion, Laura Graham have confirmed that they will travel to Coalisland to compete in the Newell 5k and 10K races taking place in the town on Friday 29th June 2018.
They will be joined by what’s hoped to be over 1000 runners in an event that is fast gaining a reputation for being a one of the stand-out races of the season.
With a prize pot that matches any event of its kind locally, a fast, flat course through idyllic countryside and its carnival atmosphere, it’s no surprise to see why the event has become a much loved in the community by runners and non runners alike.
The race, organised in association with local running collective Keep Er Lit Runners, also boasts an additional prize pot for any runner that can break the course record which currently stands at 31:30 for Male and 38:55 Female.
“We’re fully expecting that prize money to go,” said Cathal O’Hagan from Keep Er Lit Runners. “The success of last year’s event, which attracted over 1000 runners, has seen more elite runners register so it’s more of a question of what the new times will be.”
Speaking of the atmosphere and community support he continued “The Newell 5/10K is much more than running, it has quickly become an event that brings the community together in celebration and we’ll reflect that with the addition of street performers, live music and family friendly entertainment”.
The Newell 10k will start at 7.30pm in Coalisland Friday 29th June 2018 with Newell 5k to begin at 7.50pm. Online registration is available at www.athleticsni.org.
