Northern Velocity Ballykelly Trail Race 5k 2018:
On Sunday 21st January 2018, athletes descended on Ballykelly Forest for the third race of the Northern Velocity Trail Series, the Ballykelly 5k Trail Race.
The course covered three laps, with athletes braving the cold conditions and persistent rain, which lasted the entire race – however, it did nothing to dampen spirits, with some excellent performances being produced on the challenging course.
Rhodri Jones (Springwell RC), winner of Race 1 in the Series (Garvagh Forest 10k), produced another excellent outing, leading from start to finish, to win in a time of 18:43 (1st place). Team mate, Jason Scott (Springwell RC) claimed his first podium place, taking 2nd place in 19:11, with Cathal Love (City of Derry AC) securing 3rd place in 19:31.
In the ladies race, Ciara Toner (Springwell RC) continued her excellent form with her third win in this Series. Having already won the Garvagh Forest 10k and the Muff Glen Trail Race, Ciara once again dominated the race from the start, winning in 20:13 (1st place). Hannah Shields (City of Derry AC) followed in 20:55 for 2nd place, while Leanne Sands (Acorns AC) completed the top three in 21:49 (3rd place).
